Information for Middle School Parents and Students:
What is Cross Country? Does Waupaca Middle School have a cross-country team? These are a few questions that we would like to address in this letter.
What is cross-country?
Cross-country is a team sport that has a huge emphasis on individuals. Teams score by how the individuals finish in a race. Runners run a set course of 2 miles at the middle school level. Boys compete against boys and girls compete against girls.
Does Waupaca Middle School have a team?
Yes, Waupaca does have a middle school cross-country team. It is open 5-8 grades, boys and girls. We have had boys and girls’ teams for the last six years. The cross-country season is in the fall. All practices take place at the middle school. At the start of the school year a schedule is shared with the team and parents.
Why cross-country?
Cross-country is a non-contact sport. If your son or daughter has a body type that does not stand up well to the contact that some sports include, it might be the sport for them. Cross-country offers great off-season training and conditioning for other sports such as soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, wrestling and track. The sport develops a lifetime activity that can enhance a person’s health for their entire life. Cross-country teaches athletes to set goals and to work toward achieving those goals through a plan. It helps build self-esteem.
Who can I contact?
The middle school coaches are Amanda Ayala and Kareene Hansen. Middle school runners compete while in middle school and then can dovetail right into the high school team because they will already know the members of that team since we participate in many of the same races. Practice starts on August 22nd, 2022. Students are welcome to join up to two weeks after the school year starts.
